8 Of The Most Hilarious Weight Loss Scams From History
Do the math, and at that rate, you can burn up to 2.2 lbs of fat per week without changing anything about the way you eat or exercise.
Weight loss can be daunting.
Diet and exercise isn’t always as simple of a solution as it sounds.
And, that fact, coupled with our propensity towards all things easy, has prompted the diet/weight loss industry to come up with some outlandish solutions to ease the difficult work of weight loss.
Wait, did I say this industry came up with solutions? I meant scams. Yep, full blown scams!
And, if you think that word is a little harsh to describe some of these weight loss methods, just keep reading!
Warning: belly laughing and jaw dropping may ensue…please proceed with caution!
1- Weight Loss Cigarettes
Yeah, you read that correctly.
Smoke your way to a slim figure with Marlboro Skinnies! Kidding…sorry Marlboro.
Unfortunately, the only thing I’m kidding about is the branding. The concept was indeed a real weight loss scam in the late 1950’s.
The fringe benefit for the skinny smokers? These babies came filtered! Ooh la la!
Trim’s reducing-aid cigarettes claimed that if you smoked at least 3 of their cigarettes daily, you could lose 20 pounds in 8 weeks without changing your diet, because their “harmless” product would decrease your appetite by drying out your mouth.
The manufacturer even claimed that they were clinically tested and medically approved! Talk about a weighty (no pun intended) sales pitch. Eh, you say sales pitch, I say lie…potato, potato.
Either way, the FDA stepped in and grabbed 26,710 packs of these to get them off the market in 1958.
2- Tapeworms
So, maybe you belly laughed a bit at that last one…now for the jaw dropping.
Apparently, in the early 20th century, women fell for an ad that toted the following aids in weight loss via the consumption of jar-packed, sanitized, tapeworms. Sanitized, because duh, who would want to eat an unsanitized tapeworm…eww!
Check out a few lines from the ad!
“Eat! Eat! Eat! & Always Stay Thin!” (Now that’s just cruel to dangle that carrot in front of a woman.)
“No Diet. No Baths. No Exercise.” (Dang you, pesky baths!)
“No Danger: Guaranteed Harmless” (bahahahahahaha)
“FAT, the ENEMY that is Shortening Your Life: BANISHED! HOW? With Sanitized Tapeworms, jar-packed.” (In a jar? Seriously? Dude, I’m in!!)
“Friends for a fair form.” (Yep, I got nothin’ here. I mean, how do you respond to an attempt to call a tapeworm, that you eat, your friend?)
“Easy To Swallow!” (Mmmmm, goes down like sketty!)
Okay, this one turned my stomach. I’m even thinking about skipping lunch.
Hmmm, maybe I could write a series of articles about these weight loss worms and market them as the newest way to drop a pant size…the articles, not the worms, the FDA said ‘no’ on that one!
3- Diet Glasses
So, apparently if Superman can have x-ray vision, then those looking to lose weight (in the 1970’s) could don a pair of glasses and drop pounds!
I mean, why should superheroes have all the power, right?
Unfortunately the FDA had to come in and put a halt to the glasses and their weight loss aiding claims.
Vision Dieters claimed the use of “secret European color technology” to curb hunger and cravings.
How so, you ask?
Well, with one blue lens and one brown lens, when you shopped for food you wouldn’t be tempted with brightly colored packaging because the shades would…um…shade the bright colors. Hmmmm…
And, of course there’s the secret European color technology, which is no longer a secret now, and the Brits (and French, and Dutch, and Germans, and, and, and) are TICKED!!
4- Weight Loss Pills
Okay, do these even fit in any one given decade? I mean, when have diet pills not been a scam?
Truthfully, these falsely acclaimed weight loss wonders have duped those looking to shed pounds since as early as the 1800’s.
So, if you’ve fallen victim to one of these scams, don’t beat yourself up too badly, you’re in plentiful company.
The claims made by weight loss pill companies don’t vary much in terminology, but boy do they vary in regards to ingredients!!
Some of the components of these products from over the years will astound you!
There’s the vaguely worded FDA listing of a “variety of toxic or addictive substances” in these pills.
And…then there’s these specifics: amphetamines, strychnine, and arsenic!
I mean, come on!!!
Siri, what is strychnine? Siri, what is arsenic? Siri, can you consume strychnine and arsenic to lose weight?
Siri: “Strychnine and arsenic are highly poisonous chemical compounds and toxins. Giving someone strychnine or arsenic will not aid in weight loss, but it will get you thrown in the clink.”
5- Vibration Machines
From the early 1950’s and even today (seriously, I just saw a similar product being demonstrated in Costco last week!), vibration machines have been promising, with no actual proof of them working, to help people shed unwanted weight.
Hold on, maybe you’re unfamiliar with this term because you’ve heard their otherwise known name: jiggle machines!
Sorry people, Will Smith and 2 in a Room aren’t going to be commissioned anytime soon to come together with a hybrid of Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It and Wiggle It, all because machines that vibrate your buns have been proven successful.
6- Fat-reducing Gum Drops
Okay now, this one here, technically, could make someone lose weight. After all, it’s made of sugar and a potent laxative.
A 1920’s ad ran encouraging individuals to consume the “fat-reducing gum drops” and incorporate a vigorous exercise routine.
Go for a run, get the runs…see? Weight loss!!
I mean, they didn’t say it’d be safe weight loss?? Hmmm, or did they?
“A safe reducing agent that gets rid of fat by elimination.” Come all, y’all! They weren’t exactly lying!
7- Fat Soap
Ohhh, I think I get the “no baths” part of the tapeworm ad now.
Fatsoff, Fayro, and Folts were all companies that promised fat loss when you washed with their soap product.
Fayro actually claimed their product to be a “secret flesh reducing salve.”
Here we go with those secrets again. Please, tell me this wasn’t stolen from the Europeans too!!
And what did this secret (not necessarily European) technology do?
Flesh reducing salve or soap “opened your pores to let your blood cells sweat off fat.”
See, simple! Halloween soap…guts your pores, you sweat out blood…oops, I mean fat.
But alas, fat soap proved to be false soap…or, just plain old non blood cell fat-sweating, soap.
8- Slendaform
I suppose if you’ve just gotten out of the bath, and your fat soap didn’t work, why not try a liquid that you could just rub on your body to get thin?
Slendaform was a 1920’s product that toted such benefits. “Just lay it on, and pat it in, and you can watch yourself grow thin.”
And hey, when you don’t have to diet, exercise, or take other weight loss drugs (also Slendaform claims), why not just go for something that you only have to “lay on and pat in?”
It came with an unconditional guarantee and everything!!
“You can actually feel the fatty parts melting away!”
Now don’t tell me you aren’t tempted! I even searched on Amazon.
Drat, it’s currently unavailable. Oh wait, that’s the hilarious ad print, the liquid was promptly removed from the market when…you guessed it…it didn’t work!
Some Takeaways
So next time you’re looking to drop some extra pounds, skip the skinny cigs, poison pills, and tapeworms… Ditch the glasses, jiggling, soaps and creams…
You don’t need to resort to extremes to lose a lot of weight. In fact, you can drop up to 2.2 lbs per week in just 7 minutes a day (no diet. no exercise.).
How much fat can you lose in just 7 minutes a day… without diet or exercise?
According to over 39 studies from universities all over the world, a lot…
How?
Simple. Fat loss math.
One pound of fat contains 3500 calories… so if you want to lose one pound, burn 3500 more calories than you eat.
These 39 studies reveal how to burn an extra 400 to 1100 calories per day… in less than 7 minutes.

7 Ways to Create a Holistic Morning Routine
Your morning sets the tone for the entire day. A rushed, chaotic start can leave you feeling scattered and stressed, while a mindful, intentional routine can help you feel grounded, energized, and ready to take on whatever comes your way. A holistic morning routine isn’t just about productivity, but it’s about nourishing your body, mind, and soul from the moment you wake up.
Here’s how to create a morning routine that aligns with your health goals, mental clarity, and overall well-being.
1. Wake Up with Purpose
Start by giving yourself enough time in the morning. Waking up just 10–30 minutes earlier can help you transition into the day without pressure. Use this time to set an intention. Ask yourself: What kind of energy do I want to bring into today?
This simple mindset shift can help you stay centered, no matter what challenges arise.
2. Hydrate First Thing
After 7–8 hours of sleep, your body needs hydration. Drinking a glass of water (preferably with lemon) jumpstarts your metabolism, aids digestion, and flushes out toxins. Add a pinch of Himalayan salt for added minerals.
3. Gentle Movement to Wake the Body
Stretching, yoga, or a short walk can help awaken your muscles and improve circulation. Movement doesn’t have to be intense to be effective. The goal is to reconnect with your body, increase energy, and boost your mood.

4. Nourish with a Light, Balanced Breakfast

Skip the sugar-laden cereals and opt for whole, nutrient-dense foods. A balanced breakfast with protein, fiber, and healthy fats will stabilize your blood sugar and fuel your morning.

5. Practice Mindfulness
Spend 5–10 minutes meditating, journaling, or simply breathing deeply. This helps regulate stress hormones and primes your brain for focus and calm. Even just one mindful breath before starting your tasks can shift your entire outlook.
6. Limit Screen Time
Resist the urge to check your phone or social media first thing. Instead, spend your first moments being present — with yourself, your family, or nature. This preserves mental clarity and reduces anxiety triggered by digital overload.
7. Plan Your Day Intentionally
Before jumping into work, take a few minutes to review your top priorities. A written to-do list or planner can help you stay organized and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Final Thoughts
Creating a holistic morning routine isn’t about perfection but it’s about consistency and self-care. When you start your day with intention, you build a strong foundation for your health, focus, and happiness. Small, mindful choices in the morning lead to big wins over time.
Start tomorrow with a purpose. Your future self will thank you.

Mind-Body Connection: Using Holistic Practices to Reduce Stress
In today’s fast-paced world, stress can take a serious toll on both your physical and mental health. But what if the key to managing stress lies within you, through your mind-body connection?
The mind-body connection refers to the powerful relationship between your thoughts, emotions, and physical health. By embracing holistic stress-reduction practices, you can tap into this connection to calm your nervous system, improve your mood, and restore balance to your life.
Here’s how you can reduce stress naturally by strengthening your mind-body connection.
1. Meditation and Mindfulness
Meditation is one of the most powerful tools for stress reduction. By practicing mindfulness and focusing on the present moment without judgment, you train your brain to become less reactive to stress.
Try this:
- Start with 5–10 minutes of guided meditation each morning.
- Use apps like Headspace or Calm to stay consistent.
Benefits:
- Lower cortisol levels
Improved focus - Better emotional regulation
2. Yoga and Gentle Movement
Yoga combines breathwork, movement, and mindfulness — making it a holistic remedy for chronic stress and anxiety. Even simple poses like Child’s Pose or Legs-Up-the-Wall can activate your parasympathetic nervous system (your body’s relaxation mode).
Try this:
- Practice a 15-minute gentle yoga flow at the end of your day.
- Focus on deep breathing and stretching tight areas.
3. Breathwork Techniques
Intentional breathing can quickly calm your mind and regulate your nervous system.
Try this:
- Box breathing (Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4)
4-7-8 breathing to unwind before bed
Benefits:
- Reduces anxiety
- Slows heart rate
- Clears mental fog
4. Journaling and Emotional Release
Writing down your thoughts helps process emotions and gain clarity. It can also reveal patterns in your stress triggers.
Try this:
- Set aside 10 minutes daily for free writing
- Use prompts like: “What’s causing me stress today?” or “What can I let go of?”
5. Nature Therapy and Grounding
Spending time outdoors reduces stress hormones and improves overall well-being. Grounding or walking barefoot on grass or sand helps restore your body’s natural rhythms.
Try this:
- Take a 15-minute walk in nature
- Sit under a tree or near water to reset your mind
6. Herbal Teas and Natural Remedies
Holistic stress relief includes nourishing the body with calming herbs like chamomile, ashwagandha, or lavender.
Try this:
- Sip herbal tea before bed
- Use essential oils like lavender or eucalyptus in a diffuser
7. Digital Detox and Tech Boundaries
Constant connectivity contributes to mental overload. Setting boundaries with technology allows the brain to recharge.
Try this:
- Turn off notifications
Establish “no-screen” hours before bedtime
Why the Mind-Body Connection Matters

Understanding that your mind and body are not separate allows you to take control of your health in a more holistic, sustainable way. These practices go beyond short-term fixes, they create long-term resilience to stress.
Final Thoughts
Stress is unavoidable, but suffering from it doesn’t have to be. By integrating holistic mind-body practices into your daily routine, you can reduce stress naturally and create more peace, balance, and vitality in your life.

Staying on Track: How to Overcome Obstacles and Achieve Your Fitness Goals
Setting fitness goals is a great way to stay motivated and improve your overall health and well-being. However, staying on track and overcoming obstacles can be a challenge. Whether it’s lack of time, motivation, or even injuries, there are many roadblocks that can hinder your progress. But fear not, with the right strategies and mindset, you can overcome these obstacles and reach your fitness goals.
Here are some tips to help you stay on track and achieve your fitness goals:
Set realistic and specific goals: It’s important to set goals that are realistic and achievable. Instead of aiming to “lose weight” or “get in shape,” set specific and measurable goals such as “lose 10 pounds in 3 months” or “run a 5k in under 30 minutes.” This will give you a clear target to work towards and help you stay focused.
Create a plan: Once you have your goals in place, create a plan to achieve them. This could include a workout schedule, meal plan, and tracking your progress. Having a plan in place will make it easier to stay on track and overcome any obstacles that come your way.
Find an accountability partner: Having someone to hold you accountable can make a big difference in staying on track. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or a personal trainer, having someone to check in with and keep you motivated can help you stay on track and overcome any obstacles.
Stay motivated: Finding ways to stay motivated is crucial in achieving your fitness goals. Whether it’s reading inspirational stories, setting up a workout playlist, or rewarding yourself for reaching milestones, finding ways to stay motivated will help you push through any obstacles that come your way.
Listen to your body: It’s important to listen to your body and not push yourself too hard. If you’re feeling tired or sore, take a rest day or adjust your workout routine. Ignoring your body’s signals can lead to injuries and setbacks, so make sure to prioritize rest and recovery.
Be flexible: Sometimes life gets in the way and you may need to adjust your plans. It’s important to be flexible and adapt to any changes that come your way. Whether it’s a busy week at work, a family emergency, or an injury, finding ways to modify your workouts and stay on track will help you overcome any obstacles that come your way.
Seek professional help: If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to seek help from a fitness professional. Whether it’s a personal trainer, nutritionist, or physical therapist, getting professional guidance can help you overcome any obstacles and achieve your fitness goals.
Staying on track and achieving your fitness goals takes time, effort, and dedication. By setting realistic goals, creating a plan, finding motivation, listening to your body, and seeking help when needed, you can overcome any obstacles and reach your fitness goals. Remember to stay focused, be patient, and celebrate your progress along the way. With the right mindset and strategies, you can achieve your fitness goals and improve your overall health and well-being.
